Maşyāf sits west of Hama on the eastern flank of the Syrian Coastal Mountains, where the land starts to climb from the Orontes lowlands. Because of the terrain, the streets rarely run straight for long. They bend around slopes and ridges. The older quarter is compact, and newer districts spread along the roads that lead out of the valley.
The town is best known for Masyaf Castle, a medieval fortress on a rocky outcrop. In the twelfth century it became the main stronghold of the Nizari Ismailis in Syria, under the leader Rashid ad-Din Sinan. On the map the castle appears as a distinct, compact shape at the edge of the old town, a clear point of reference.

Old quarter
Close to the castle, the older part of town is a dense cluster of narrow lanes and small plots. Its pattern is finer and tighter than that of the newer districts around it.
Mountain roads
Roads leave the town along the slopes, some climbing west into the coastal mountains and others descending toward Hama. They draw long curving lines across the edges of the print.
