Matagalpa Map Poster & Print
Matagalpa lies in the north-central highlands of Nicaragua, in a narrow valley surrounded by green mountains. It is often called the Pearl of the North. From above, the city stretches along the valley floor in a long band. Streets climb partway up the slopes before steep ground stops them, which gives the built-up area clear edges.
The Río Grande de Matagalpa runs through the valley, and the city grew along its course, so the river forms the spine of the map. A colonial-era grid near the cathedral and central park gives way to more irregular neighbourhoods on the hillsides, where streets bend with the contours instead of following straight lines.
The mountains around the city form one of Nicaragua's main coffee regions, and farms and cloud forest fill much of the land just outside the frame. A Matagalpa map poster shows how the terrain limits the town: a dense, linear city held tightly between ridges, with roads leaving mainly along the valley.
