Mathur lies on the northern fringe of Chennai, in Tamil Nadu, in the belt of neighbourhoods that has grown up between the city proper and the industrial zone around Manali. It is mainly residential, and its map reflects decades of steady building: plots subdivided into narrow lanes, streets packed closely together, and blocks that fill almost every piece of available land.
Around the residential core, the texture changes. Larger industrial sites, rail and road corridors and pockets of open ground break up the pattern, creating wide empty shapes between the fine-grained neighbourhoods. The Bay of Bengal lies a few kilometres to the east, and on the flat coastal plain the street network spreads evenly, with no hills to bend it.
