Mavoor lies inland in Kozhikode district in northern Kerala, on the banks of the Chaliyar, one of the state's longest rivers. The settlement follows the river and the roads toward Kozhikode. From above, houses, coconut groves and small fields cover the low, rolling ground in a continuous green pattern.
For decades, Mavoor was known for its large rayon factory beside the Chaliyar. The factory closed in 2001 after long disputes over pollution of the river, and the case became an important moment in Kerala's environmental history. The river remains the town's defining feature.
A Mavoor map poster follows the broad curve of the Chaliyar, with the town's lanes branching away from its bank. There is no grid here. Roads follow the gentle hills, and small streams and paddy land open up the pattern between them.
