McAlester Map Poster & Print
McAlester is the seat of Pittsburg County in south-eastern Oklahoma, in hilly country within the Choctaw Nation. The town grew where railway lines crossed. From above, its core is a regular grid of streets aligned with the tracks, surrounded by residential neighbourhoods and by highways heading out toward lakes and wooded hills.
Coal mining drove its early growth in the late nineteenth century and drew workers from many countries to the surrounding mines. McAlester is also known as the home of the Oklahoma State Penitentiary and of a large army ammunition plant nearby. On a McAlester map poster, the rail lines, the straight downtown grid and the looser outer streets form a clear, distinctive pattern.
Lake Eufaula, one of the largest lakes in Oklahoma, lies to the north, and smaller reservoirs and creeks break up the countryside around the city. The map places McAlester within that landscape: a dense, orderly centre, rail corridors running through it and the irregular edges of water and woodland beyond.
