Mělník stands in Central Bohemia on a promontory overlooking one of the most important river junctions in the Czech Republic, where the Vltava flows into the Elbe. From above, the historic town sits on the high ground at the southern edge of the confluence, while the rivers and their floodplain spread out below in wide, flat curves.
A Mělník map poster shows this layering clearly. The compact old town, with its square and tight lanes, occupies the ridge; newer districts extend inland to the east and north; and the rivers, a canal and the lowland meadows fill the western side. The contrast between the dense historic core and open water gives the composition real balance.
Mělník is known for its castle, long associated with the Lobkowicz family, and for the vineyards that cover the slopes beneath it, making the town a centre of one of Bohemia's small wine regions. The Church of St Peter and Paul next to the castle has an ossuary in its crypt, and from the terraces there are views across the plain toward Říp hill.
