Mérignac is the largest suburb of Bordeaux, lying just west of the city within Bordeaux Métropole. On a map it reads as a wide, varied territory rather than a single town: dense residential streets near the centre, garden suburbs spreading outwards, business parks, and, dominating the west, the runways of Bordeaux–Mérignac Airport cutting long, precise lines through the landscape.
The Rocade, the ring road around Bordeaux, crosses the commune and forms one of its strongest graphic elements, separating inner neighbourhoods from outer ones. Mérignac is also a centre of French aerospace, home to a Dassault Aviation site where Rafale and Falcon aircraft are assembled. Industrial zones near the airport show up as large, simple blocks among finer residential streets.
Parks and woodland add softer shapes, including the grounds of the Parc de Bourran and patches of pine toward the western edge.
