Minden lies on the Weser in the northeast of North Rhine-Westphalia, a short distance north of the Porta Westfalica, where the river breaks through a range of hills. Its old town sits on the west bank around the cathedral, whose westwork is one of the region's best-known medieval buildings.
The map's most unusual feature is the Minden waterway crossing, where the Mittelland Canal is carried over the Weser on an aqueduct, with locks connecting the two levels. The canal cuts across the landscape in a long, straight line, while the river winds from south to north. Minden is also known for the battle of 1759 fought nearby during the Seven Years' War.
