Mucuri is located at the southern tip of Bahia's coastline, close to the border with Espírito Santo. The town gets its name from the Mucuri River, which reaches the Atlantic here. On a map, the river mouth is the central feature, with water curving through lowland before opening into the sea.
The town lies between the river and the coast, with a simple pattern of streets and a long stretch of beach running along the shoreline. Behind it, the land is flat and largely agricultural, with large plantations of eucalyptus, which supply the pulp industry that has become important in this region.
