Nālchiti lies in the Barisal Division of southern Bangladesh, in a landscape shaped entirely by water. The town sits on a river in the lower Ganges delta, and on a map its streets follow the banks and the smaller channels, known as khals, that branch through the surrounding fields.
The built-up area is compact, with a riverfront where boats and ferries have long connected the town to the wider network of waterways. Behind the waterfront, lanes and footpaths spread into a mix of homes, ponds, trees and cultivated plots, so the urban edge blends gradually into the countryside.
Like much of the region, Nālchiti has historically relied on river trade and river transport, which is still visible in the way roads bend to follow the water rather than cutting straight across the land.
