Nanzhou Map Poster & Print
Nanzhou is the seat of Nan County, in the Yiyang area of northern Hunan. It lies on the low alluvial plain around Dongting Lake, one of China's largest freshwater lakes. From above, the land is a mesh of waterways, embankments, fish ponds and rice fields. The town appears as a denser patch of streets inside that watery grid.
Settlement on the Dongting plain has long depended on dikes that hold back seasonal floods and enclose farmland known as polders. Their long, straight embankments and drainage channels show up clearly on a map. Nanzhou's older streets are packed close together, while newer districts are laid out with wider roads and larger blocks. This mirrors the growth of many Chinese county towns in recent decades.
