Neubrandenburg is known as the city of four gates, and from above you can see why at once. The historic centre is an almost perfect oval, wrapped in a medieval stone wall that survives nearly all the way round. Four Gothic brick gates, one at each end of the old main axes, lead through it, and a green belt of ramparts and moats follows the wall on the outside.
Inside the ring, the centre was largely rebuilt after the Second World War. It follows a clear rectilinear plan, with the restored Marienkirche, now a concert hall, near its heart. South of the town lies the Tollensesee, a long glacial lake whose narrow shape stretches away from the city like a pointer.

Tollensesee
The long, narrow lake reaches south from the edge of the city. It adds a strong, calm shape of open water beside the dense centre.
