Otamanivka sits in the Luhansk region of eastern Ukraine, where the Donbas steppe rolls out in long, gentle slopes. On a map the settlement reads as a spread of low-rise streets. Some run along the contours and some follow the country roads that lead out to the fields. The edges are soft, with houses and gardens thinning out gradually into cultivated land.
This is a quiet, domestic landscape. There are no big set-piece features. You see the small grid of residential lanes, the occasional larger road carrying traffic on to neighbouring towns, and the faint lines of gullies and streams that cut through the steppe. The map records how people have settled this land over time: close to the roads, near the water, beside the fields.
