Perunad lies in Pathanamthitta district in central Kerala, in the forested hill country east of the coastal plain. Its map is shaped by the land: roads follow river valleys and ridges, houses cluster along them, and much of the surrounding area is covered by plantations and forest. There is no grid here; the settlement pattern traces the terrain.
The area is closely associated with the route toward Sabarimala, the major hill shrine in the Western Ghats, and during the pilgrimage season the roads through the region carry large numbers of devotees. The Pamba River and its tributaries run through the district, giving the map its natural lines.
