Pīrmām, also known as Masif or Salahaddin, lies in the Erbil Governorate of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, on a mountain ridge northeast of the city of Erbil. On a map the town stands out for how closely it follows the terrain: streets run along the crest and wind down the slopes in switchbacks.
From the ridge, the land drops away toward the broad, flat Erbil plain, and the difference is clear from above. On the plain, roads run long and straight across fields; in Pīrmām, the street network is tighter and more irregular, shaped by contour lines rather than by a grid.
The town's height and cooler air have long made it a summer retreat from the heat of the plain, and it is also known as an important political centre in the region. A Pīrmām map poster shows a settlement defined by its ridge, a place where elevation shapes every road.
