Ponmana lies in Kanyakumari district, near the southern tip of India, where the plains meet the foothills of the Western Ghats. The landscape is green and well watered, and on a map the settlement looks less like a single dense town than a network of lanes linking houses, fields and plantations.
Roads curve with the terrain rather than following a grid, and small water bodies and irrigation channels appear between the built areas. The pattern is soft and irregular, typical of this corner of the state.
