Ponmana lies on the coast of Kollam district in southern Kerala, on a thin strip of land between the Arabian Sea and the inland waters that run parallel to it. On the map, the shape is defined by water: a long, nearly straight shoreline to the west and a canal and backwater system to the east, with scattered houses and lanes in between.
The sands of this coast are rich in heavy minerals such as ilmenite and monazite, and the area around Chavara and Ponmana is known for mineral sand mining. That activity has changed the shape of the shore and the land over the years, and it is a well-known subject of local debate about coastal erosion.
