Pontefract is a market town in West Yorkshire, east of Wakefield. Its centre is a tight knot of older streets around the market place, with lanes running out to the castle ruins on a rise to the northeast. Around this core, twentieth-century housing estates spread outward in looser curves, and the town meets neighbouring Castleford and Knottingley across fields and rail lines.
Pontefract Castle is the town's best-known landmark. It was one of the most important fortresses in the north of England, and it is where Richard II is believed to have died in 1400. The castle was badly damaged after the sieges of the Civil War, and today its outline sits as an irregular open space at the edge of the old town.
A Pontefract map poster includes the long loop of the racecourse to the northwest, one of the most recognisable shapes on the map, along with the several railway lines that cross the town. The area is also famous for liquorice, grown locally for centuries and still remembered in the small black sweets known as Pontefract cakes.
