Quilmes Map Poster & Print
Quilmes lies in the south of Greater Buenos Aires, between the capital and La Plata, with the Río de la Plata along its north-eastern edge. The city follows the regular grid of square blocks typical of the region and is centred on the railway line to La Plata. The grid stops abruptly at a band of low coastal land and the waterfront promenade.
The name recalls the Quilmes people, who were forcibly moved here from the Calchaquí valleys in the north-west in the seventeenth century after resisting Spanish rule. The town that grew around their settlement later became an industrial suburb. It is best known for the brewery founded in 1888 that gave its name to Argentina's most familiar beer.
On the map the grid runs almost unbroken across the city, with a few diagonal avenues and green spaces interrupting the rhythm. A Quilmes map poster shows that dense, even texture ending at the river. There the shoreline and marshy ground open onto the wide expanse of the Río de la Plata.
