Rāmpur Map Poster & Print
Rāmpur was the capital of a princely state ruled by Nawabs from the eighteenth century until after Indian independence. The city lies on the plain of western Uttar Pradesh, with the Kosi river passing close by. From above, the historic centre is a dense knot of streets, while palace grounds and gardens form open, geometric spaces within it.
The best-known landmark is the Rampur Raza Library, founded by the Nawabs and housed in the Hamid Manzil palace within the old fort. It holds a celebrated collection of manuscripts and Mughal miniatures. Around the fort, bazaars and residential lanes spread outward, and old gateways still mark some of the routes into the historic city.
Rāmpur is also known for its distinctive culinary tradition and for the Rampur Hound, a sighthound breed that carries the city's name.
