Rouen Map Poster & Print
Rouen sits on a great loop of the Seine, between Paris and the sea. The historic centre rises on the north bank, backed by chalk hills, and the river curves around to the south, where the flatter left bank holds the port and newer districts. Several bridges connect the two sides, including the tall lift bridge Pont Gustave-Flaubert downstream.
The old town is a fine-grained mesh of narrow streets lined with half-timbered houses. It is anchored by the cathedral of Notre-Dame, which Claude Monet painted many times in changing light, and by the Gros-Horloge, an astronomical clock set in an arch over the street. Joan of Arc was burned at the Place du Vieux-Marché in 1431.
