Salinas Map Poster & Print
Salinas sits near the northern end of the Salinas Valley, about fifteen kilometres inland from Monterey Bay. From above, it is a broad, level grid of streets, with Highway 101 running along its edge. Around the city, farmland forms a patchwork of long rectangular fields that continues well past the last suburbs.
That farmland gave the valley its nickname, the Salad Bowl of the World, because a large share of the lettuce and leafy greens eaten in the United States is grown here. The Salinas River runs to the south-west on its way to the sea, and the Gabilan Range and Santa Lucia Range enclose the valley on either side.
John Steinbeck was born in Salinas and set East of Eden and other books in the valley. The National Steinbeck Center stands in the old downtown on Main Street. A Salinas map poster shows the difference between tight town blocks and the wide geometry of the fields around them.
