Siilinjärvi lies just north of Kuopio in North Savo. From above, the first thing you notice is water: long, narrow lakes and bays with jagged shorelines, typical of the Finnish Lakeland. Roads and houses follow the dry ridges between them, and larger stretches of forest fill the space around them. The town centre is a compact cluster of streets set among all this water.
Two lines of transport run through the municipality from north to south: the main highway towards Kuopio and the railway beside it. Both show up clearly as long, straight strokes against the curving shorelines. Kuopio's airport also sits within Siilinjärvi's borders, and on a map its runway reads as a straight bar laid across the landscape.
Siilinjärvi is best known for its phosphate mine, a large open pit that has been worked for decades and is among the biggest in Finland. On the Siilinjärvi map poster the mine's terraced outline sits beside lakes and woodland, a man-made shape next to natural ones. In black and white, the contrast between them becomes the main subject of the print.
