Skövde sits in Västra Götaland between Sweden's two largest lakes, Vänern and Vättern. The flat-topped mountain Billingen rises directly west of the town. On the map, Billingen appears as a large, mostly street-free area, and Skövde spreads east from its foot with a compact centre, residential districts and industrial zones along the railway.
The town is known as an industrial and military centre. Volvo has long had a major engine plant here, and Skövde has been a garrison town for generations. It is also home to the University of Skövde. Those roles are visible from above in the big industrial footprints, the barracks areas and the campus next to the ordinary grid of homes and streets.
