Colonial grid
The historic centre is laid out in regular blocks around the main plaza. At poster scale, it forms a neat checkerboard surrounded by more irregular hill country.

关于地图
Socorro Map Poster & Print
Socorro stands in the Andean hills of Santander, above the valley of the Suárez River. Its centre follows the Spanish colonial pattern: a regular grid of blocks around a main plaza. Here, though, the ground is anything but flat. Seen from above, the grid holds its shape while the streets climb and drop across the slope, and the edges soften where the land gets steeper.
Socorro has a special place in Colombian history. In 1781 it was the starting point of the Comuneros uprising against colonial taxes, when Manuela Beltrán tore down a royal tax edict in the town. The revolt is remembered as an early step toward independence, and Socorro is still closely associated with it.
The large basilica on the main square dominates the centre, and the surrounding blocks keep much of their colonial layout. A Socorro map poster shows that layout clearly: an orderly grid set into rugged hills, with roads leaving town along the valley and up into the mountains.

Plaza and basilica
The main square, with its large basilica, is the town's focal point. It appears as a clear open rectangle at the centre of the street grid.
Suárez valley
The town looks down over the valley of the Suárez River. A wider frame shows how the roads follow the valley and wind up into the surrounding slopes.

为什么选 Socorro
一张有意义的地图
For Santandereanos and anyone interested in Colombian history, Socorro means something beyond its size. A map of its centre is both a personal keepsake and a reminder of 1781, set in a clear grid that suits a wall.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can all be changed, for example to add a family name or a special date. Choose from five styles: Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Order it printed, or download the $9 files and print it yourself.
