Springfield Map Poster & Print
Springfield rises from the east bank of the Connecticut River in western Massachusetts. On the map, the river forms a strong vertical line along its western edge, with Interstate 91 running beside it and bridges reaching across to West Springfield. Downtown is a compact grid close to the water, and residential neighbourhoods fan out to the east and south.
The city has an unusual list of firsts. Basketball was invented here in 1891 by James Naismith at the YMCA training school, and the Basketball Hall of Fame stands by the river. The Springfield Armory made American military firearms for almost two centuries, and Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, was born here.
