Stroud Map Poster & Print
Stroud sits at the point where five valleys of the western Cotswolds converge, and its map is shaped almost entirely by that geography. Streets run steeply up and along the hillsides, terraces follow the contours, and the town centre occupies a tight space above the valley floor. Few English towns show their terrain so clearly in the pattern of their roads.
The valleys once powered dozens of woollen mills, and Stroud became known for fine cloth, including the red Stroudwater Scarlet used for military uniforms. The Stroudwater Navigation and the Thames and Severn Canal ran through the valley bottom, and restoration work has been bringing parts of them back into use.
