Thāne Map Poster
Thāne lies immediately north of Mumbai, held between the wooded hills of Sanjay Gandhi National Park on the west and Thane Creek on the east. The city is often called the City of Lakes, and the map shows why: dozens of small lakes and ponds are scattered among its neighbourhoods, round and oval spots of water inside the dense street pattern.
The oldest part of the city grew near Masunda Lake, also known as Talao Pali, which remains a clear marker in the centre. The Ulhas River and its creek curve around the northern edge, and the Yeoor Hills rise to the west, so the city fills a long corridor of flat ground between green slopes and tidal water.
Thāne has a notable place in rail history: India's first passenger train ran from Bombay to Thane in 1853, and the line still runs through the heart of the city. The wide tidal creek on the eastern side separates the city from Navi Mumbai and shows as a broad, pale band edged by mangroves and marshland.
Yeoor Hills
On the western side, the hills of the national park stop the city abruptly, leaving a sharp boundary between dense streets and open forest.
