Urus-Martan is a town in Chechnya, on the Chechen plain south-west of Grozny, where the flat land begins to rise toward the foothills of the Greater Caucasus. The Martan river runs through the town from the mountains to the south. From above, streets stretch in long lines across the plain, with gardens and farmland around them.
An Urus-Martan map poster shows the broad, open layout of a large lowland settlement: long parallel streets with houses and plots on either side, crossed by the main roads leading toward Grozny and the mountain villages. The river cuts a winding line through this pattern and softens the regular geometry of the streets.
Toward the south, the land climbs and the ridges of the Caucasus begin, visible from town on a clear day. The town serves as the centre of its district. On paper, it is a calm composition: a long street pattern, a river flowing down from the mountains, and fields filling the open plain around it.
