Valença lies in the south of Rio de Janeiro state, in the hilly country of the Paraíba do Sul valley. The centre sits in a valley between green hills, and the streets follow the lie of the land rather than a strict grid, bending around slopes and running along the stream beds.
In the nineteenth century this area was one of Brazil's great coffee regions, and large fazendas were built across the surrounding hills. Some of those farmhouses still stand and are visited today. On the map the town shows as a dense centre with long roads reaching out along the valleys.
The district of Conservatória, part of the municipality, is known throughout Brazil for its tradition of serenades, with musicians walking the streets at night. A Valença map poster shows a hill town shaped by its valleys and its coffee past.
