Villukuri lies in the Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu, near the southern tip of the Indian subcontinent. The land here is greener and more crowded than much of the state, set between the Western Ghats and the sea. On a map, the town is less a compact block than a network of lanes spreading through planted land.
Streets run informally, following old paths between houses, temples, churches and gardens. Main roads connect Villukuri with nearby towns in the district, and between them the settled land mixes with paddy fields, water tanks and coconut groves. The line between town and village is often blurred, as it is across much of this densely settled region.
