Yantongshan is a town in central Jilin province, in northeast China. It lies in the hilly country that rises between the Songliao plain and the Changbai mountains to the east. From above, the settlement is compact. Its streets are gathered on the ground that is level enough to build on, while farmland and forest fill the surrounding slopes.
On the map, the town is defined less by monuments than by the land itself: the course of the main roads, the edges of the fields and the small streams that drain the hills. Winters in this part of Jilin are long and cold, and the town has the practical, compact form common in the northeast, with little space left between buildings.
