Aginskoye is the administrative centre of the Agin-Buryat district in Zabaykalsky Krai, east of Lake Baikal. It lies in the valley of the Aga River, surrounded by open steppe. From above, the settlement is a neat grid of streets and wooden-house plots placed on a wide, almost empty landscape.
The steppe lets the town stand out clearly on the map. There are no dense forests or neighbouring suburbs, only grassland, the curving river and a few roads heading off toward distant villages. Inside the settlement, long parallel streets are broken by a few larger public spaces and administrative blocks.
