Ambato Map Poster & Print
Ambato, capital of Tungurahua Province, sits in the inter-Andean valley of central Ecuador at about 2,500 metres. The Ambato River has cut a deep gorge along the city, and the map shows a street network that climbs onto terraces above it, crossing the ravines on a few bridges. The central grid is compact and regular, while neighbourhoods on the slopes follow the curves of the land.
Much of the centre was rebuilt after a severe earthquake in 1949, which gives downtown a more modern character than many Andean colonial towns. Parks and green spaces fill several of the steep ravines, and historic quintas, country houses with gardens, sit in a greener belt near the river. To the southeast, the Tungurahua volcano rises beyond the edge of the map.
Ambato is known as the city of flowers and fruits, and each year it holds the Fiesta de la Fruta y de las Flores around carnival time. It is also the birthplace of the writers Juan Montalvo and Juan León Mera, author of the words of Ecuador's national anthem. An Ambato map poster traces the gorge, the grid and the slopes that make the city so distinct.

Rebuilt centre
Downtown was reconstructed after the 1949 earthquake, and its compact grid of streets reads as a tidy core on the terrace above the river.
Quinta belt
Along the river, the green grounds of historic country houses and parks soften the map, a quiet band between the gorge and the denser city above.

For Ambateños abroad, a map of the city carries the gorge, the plazas and the festival streets they grew up with. For visitors passing through on the way to Baños or the highlands, it is a lasting record of the Andes at their most dramatic.
