Quito lies at around 2,850 metres above sea level, in a narrow valley in the Andes, just south of the equator. From above, the city appears as a long band running north–south. To the west rise the slopes of the Pichincha volcano, and to the east the land drops into deep ravines, so the city has little room to spread sideways.
The historic centre, with its colonial grid of streets, churches and plazas, was among the first places listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. South of it, El Panecillo hill stands out as a green knoll within the city. To the north, newer districts follow a looser grid, with parks such as La Carolina.
The former airport in the north has been turned into Parque Bicentenario, whose long runway is still visible as a strip in the park. Streets climb the lower slopes of Pichincha and descend toward the valleys to the east. A Quito map poster shows how tightly the city is shaped by mountains and valleys.
