Ashta is a town in Sangli district in southern Maharashtra, in the agricultural country of the Krishna river basin. Seen from above, the town has a dense, tightly packed centre where older lanes crowd together, and newer growth spreads out along the main roads. Around it, the landscape opens into a regular patchwork of irrigated fields.
This part of Maharashtra is closely associated with sugarcane and cooperative sugar production, and the map shows it indirectly.
