Bacoli Map Poster & Print
Bacoli occupies the western end of the Campi Flegrei, the volcanic area west of Naples, and its map is dominated by water. The land breaks into small craters, lakes and inlets: Lake Miseno and Lake Fusaro sit just inland from the sea, the harbour of Baia curves beneath its castle, and Capo Miseno ends the peninsula in a rounded, steep-sided headland.
This coast was a favoured retreat of wealthy Romans, and the imperial fleet was based at Misenum. Much of ancient Baia now lies underwater because of the slow rise and fall of the ground known as bradyseism, and it is protected as a submerged archaeological park. On land, the vast Roman cistern called the Piscina Mirabilis remains one of the area's most striking sites.

Two coastal lakes
Lake Miseno fills an old crater basin just behind the shore. Lake Fusaro, further north, is known for the Casina Vanvitelliana, a small royal pavilion standing on an islet near its bank.
The bay of Baia
The curved harbour under the Aragonese castle hides a sunken Roman town offshore, so the plain water on the map covers villas, mosaics and streets now below sea level.
