Bankāpur lies in the Haveri district of northern Karnataka, on the open plains of the Deccan. The map shows a town of compact lanes next to the outline of an old fort. Its enclosure and earthworks still define part of the town's shape. Beyond, fields and tanks spread across the flat landscape, crossed by roads to nearby towns.
