Orderly centre
The core of town follows a regular plan laid out in the nineteenth century, producing a tidy pattern of blocks distinct from older hill towns nearby.

Battipaglia Map Poster & Print
Battipaglia lies on the Piana del Sele, the broad coastal plain that opens south of Salerno. Unlike many hill towns of Campania, it grew on flat land, and its centre follows a more regular layout. Straight roads extend into farmland, and the Tyrrhenian coast lies a short distance to the west.
The town took shape in the mid-nineteenth century as an agricultural settlement for families displaced by the 1857 earthquake. It was heavily damaged during the Allied landings at Salerno in 1943 and later rebuilt. Today it is widely associated with mozzarella di bufala, produced from the herds raised across the plain.
A Battipaglia map poster reflects that history in its lines. The centre is orderly, the edges spread outward along roads and railway, and the surrounding plain is marked by long field boundaries and irrigation lines. It is a map of a working lowland town rather than a picturesque one, and it reads with clarity.

Sele plain
Flat farmland surrounds the town, crossed by straight roads and field edges, giving the outer map a calm, open quality.
Road and rail corridor
Battipaglia sits on the main routes south from Salerno, and the railway and roads cut clear lines through and around the town.
