Bhāgalpur stretches along the southern bank of the Ganges in eastern Bihar, and the river is the dominant feature of its map: wide, shifting and edged with sandbanks that change shape from season to season. The old city lies close to the water in a dense web of narrow lanes, while newer neighbourhoods, the railway and main roads spread south onto the flat plain.
The city is known across India as the Silk City for its tussar silk, woven on handlooms in neighbourhoods around town.
