Saharsa lies on the broad, flat alluvial plain of north Bihar, in the region shaped by the Kosi River. The Kosi is well known for shifting its course and for serious floods, and its old channels and swampy low ground can be seen across the surrounding land. The town sits on this very level terrain, with no hills to break the view.
Saharsa is the headquarters of the Kosi division and an important railway town for the region. The railway runs through the town, and the neighbourhoods and market streets gather on both sides of it. Beyond the town, roads and field boundaries cross farmland dotted with ponds and small villages.
