City of ponds
Numerous large tanks and ponds sit within the urban area, turning the street network into a series of loops and giving the map a distinctive, spotted texture.

Darbhanga Map Poster & Print
Darbhanga is the cultural centre of the Mithila region in north Bihar, a flat, fertile plain crossed by rivers flowing down from Nepal. Seen from above, the city is unusual: its streets curve and bend around a large number of ponds and tanks, some of them sizeable, so the map is dotted with smooth patches of water set among dense housing.
For centuries this was the seat of the Darbhanga Raj, one of the wealthiest landholding estates in British India. Its rulers left a series of palaces and walled compounds in the city, several of which now house universities, including the Kameshwar Singh Darbhanga Sanskrit University. On a map these grounds form large, regular blocks among the irregular lanes.
The region is also known for Mithila painting, a folk art tradition of fine linework and dense pattern. A Darbhanga map poster has something of that same quality in black and white, with the rounded shapes of ponds, the rectangles of palace grounds and the fine tracery of streets all held together on the page.

Raj compound
The former palace grounds of the Darbhanga Raj occupy a broad walled area, with large buildings and open lawns that stand out clearly from the surrounding lanes.
Mithila plain
Beyond the city edge, roads and rail lines run out across a flat, low-lying landscape of fields and streams that is prone to flooding in the monsoon.

Darbhanga holds deep meaning for people from Mithila, many of whom now live far from home. A map of the city, with its unmistakable ponds, is a personal and understated way to bring that connection into a new home.
Add a title and subtitle of your choice and edit the coordinates line. Pick from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, then download the watermark-free 300 DPI files for $9 or order a printed poster with an optional wooden frame.
