Chernushka is in the south of Perm Krai, in the gently rolling country west of the Urals. The town takes its name from the small Chernushka river, whose valley runs through it. On a map, the centre is a fairly regular grid of blocks, and industrial areas and rail lines stretch along one side. Fields and forest fill the landscape beyond.
The town grew with the railway and later with the oil industry, which became central to its economy in the second half of the twentieth century.
