Ghazīpur stretches along the northern bank of the Ganges in eastern Uttar Pradesh, downstream from Varanasi. From above, the town is long and narrow. Its older lanes press close to the river and ghats line the water's edge. Newer neighbourhoods spread back from the bank onto the flat plain behind.
In the colonial period the town was the site of a large government opium factory, founded in the early nineteenth century. It still operates today as a government alkaloid works. Lord Cornwallis, Governor-General of India, also died in Ghazīpur in 1805. His tomb, a domed memorial, stands in the town.
