Castle on the ridge
The long fortress crowns the hill above the old town. It forms the most prominent shape on the poster and the point all the lanes lead up to.

Gjirokastër Map Poster & Print
Gjirokastër rises up the slope of Mount Mali i Gjerë in southern Albania, looking out over the broad Drino valley. On a map, the old town is unmistakable. Narrow, twisting lanes wrap around the hillside, following the contours in tight curves, and all converge toward the long fortress on the ridge above. The newer town spreads out more regularly on the lower ground toward the valley floor.
The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site, known for its Ottoman-era tower houses built of grey stone and roofed with stone slabs. That gives Gjirokastër its nickname, the city of stone. The writer Ismail Kadare was born here and set one of his best-known novels in the town. The castle, one of the largest in the Balkans, dominates the skyline and the map alike.
A Gjirokastër map poster captures a town shaped by steep ground. At the top, the castle forms a large, solid outline. Below it, the old lanes spill down the slope in a dense, spiralling pattern. In the valley, the newer streets and the river give the composition a calmer, open base. There are few places where the terrain is so clearly visible in the streets.

Hillside old town
Stone-paved lanes wind tightly around the slope in contour-following curves. The result is one of the most intricate street patterns in the Balkans.
Drino valley
Below the town, the river valley opens up into wide, flat ground. It gives the map a quiet, spacious lower half.
