Gonbad-e Kāvūs Map Poster & Print
Gonbad-e Kāvūs lies in Golestan Province, where the green foothills of the Alborz give way to the open Turkmen Sahra steppe, which stretches north toward the border with Turkmenistan. The Gorgan River runs close to the city. From above, its streets form a broad, fairly regular grid, and the park around the tower is a clear open space near the centre.
The tower of Gonbad-e Qabus was completed in 1006 or 1007 for the Ziyarid ruler Qabus ibn Voshmgir. At around 53 metres, it is often described as the tallest brick tower in the world. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2012 and gave the city its name. The region is also home to a large Turkmen community known for carpets and horse breeding.
A Gonbad-e Kāvūs map poster reads cleanly: the grid of streets, the park around the tower and the river curving along the edge, with farmland spreading outward in large regular fields. On paper the tower is only a small point, yet its place at the heart of the map says a great deal about the city.

Gorgan River
The river winds past the city on its way west toward the Caspian Sea. Its meandering line softens the edge of the street grid.
Steppe farmland
Beyond the built-up area, the Turkmen Sahra plain is divided into large rectangular fields, giving the poster a wide, orderly border.

For people from Golestan, and for travellers who have stood beneath the tower, this map connects a personal memory with one of Iran's most remarkable monuments. It is also simply a handsome plan of a steppe city, clear and uncluttered.
