Gubbi is in Tumakuru district, Karnataka, on the dry southern Deccan plateau, west of the city of Tumakuru. The town is compact. Its older streets are tightly packed around the temple area, and later growth follows the main roads. The highway west from Tumakuru passes through, and the railway line runs close by.
Gubbi has a special place in Kannada culture. It was home to the Gubbi Company, the theatre troupe led by Gubbi Veeranna that shaped Kannada stage and early cinema. The town is also known for its Channabasaveshwara temple. On the map, reservoirs and tanks, the traditional water tanks of the Deccan, appear as irregular shapes among the fields.
