Hālol lies in the Panchmahal district of eastern Gujarat, northeast of Vadodara. On a map the town is a tight cluster of streets around an older core, bordered by main roads leading toward Vadodara, Godhra and the hills. A short distance to the southeast rises Pavagadh, a steep, isolated hill topped by a temple that draws large numbers of pilgrims.
At the foot of the hill lies Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that preserves the remains of a capital from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, with mosques, fortifications and stepwells. On the map its walled enclosures and old roads sit among fields and forest, in contrast with the modern town only a few kilometres away.
A Hālol map poster also shows the town's modern side. A large industrial estate, home to automotive and other factories, spreads along the main roads in broad rectangular plots.
