Compound blocks
Houses stand within walled yards, so the town's blocks are made of enclosures rather than rows of buildings. The streets between them are wide and unpaved, forming a loose, irregular grid.

Iriba Map Poster & Print
Iriba lies in Wadi Fira Province in eastern Chad, in dry Sahel country near the border with Sudan. From above, the town is a low, spreading settlement of compounds and sandy streets. Walled yards, rather than continuous rows of buildings, define its blocks. Beyond the last houses the land opens into sparse scrub, crossed by the dry beds of seasonal wadis that fill only during the short rains.
The area is the homeland of the Zaghawa people, and Iriba has long been a regional centre for trade and administration. Since the Darfur conflict began in the early 2000s, large camps for Sudanese refugees have been set up nearby, and the town has become an important base for humanitarian work in eastern Chad.
An Iriba map poster reflects this spare environment. Its lines are few and deliberate: a handful of roads leading out across open ground, the irregular grid of compounds at the centre, and the meandering traces of wadis. On paper, the wide empty space gives the composition a stark, graphic quality.

Seasonal wadis
Dry riverbeds wind across the plain around Iriba. They carry water only briefly in the rainy season but remain visible on the map as soft, curving lines.
Roads into the Sahel
A few tracks and roads lead out from the town toward villages, camps and the border region, drawing long lines across wide, empty land.

For people from Wadi Fira, and for aid workers and researchers who have spent time here, Iriba holds strong personal meaning. A minimal map shows the place with dignity, focusing on its shape rather than on headlines.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, and choose from five styles, with Sand a natural fit for the Sahel. Download the $9 HD files in six sizes or order a printed poster from a print partner.
