Isernia is the capital of its province in Molise, in the southern Apennines. The historic town sits on a long, narrow ridge between two small river valleys, and its main street runs along the spine of that ridge from one end to the other.
That shape makes the map striking. The old centre is a thin, elongated strip, with lanes falling away steeply on both sides, while newer districts spread across the lower ground. An Isernia map poster shows the contrast between the linear historic core and the more open modern town around it.
